Psychosis can be defined as a mental state in which a person experiences a disconnection from reality. This might involve hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that aren't there) and/or delusions (believing things that aren't true). Psychotic episodes can be very frightening and often lead to a diagnosis of schizophrenia. However, not everyone who experiences psychosis will be diagnosed with schizophrenia and there are many different types of psychotic disorder.
