Hemorrhoids are swollen, inflamed veins in and around the anus that can cause itching, anal discomfort and rectal bleeding. There are a number of different surgical procedures available to treat hemorrhoids, each with its own pros and cons.

The best overall procedure for treating hemorrhoids will depend largely on the severity of the condition. For less severe cases, non-operative treatments such as rubber band ligation may be enough to provide relief. This involves placing a tight band around the base of an internal hemorrhoid causing it to eventually fall off within a few days. The remaining scar tissue provides additional support against future prolapse or enlargement of the affected vein.

In more serious cases where non-surgical treatments have failed to provide relief or stop bleeding, surgical intervention may be required. Hemorrhoidectomy is one such procedure which involves cutting away external or prolapsed internal hemorrhoidal tissue through an incision in order to reduce symptoms and prevent further complications from developing in advanced stages like thrombosis (formation of blood clots) or strangulation (blockage). Another effective procedure is transanal haemorrhoidal dearterialisation (THD), which uses specialised instruments inserted through the anus without any need for cutting open surgically reducing pain sensation significantly postoperatively when compared with other common techniques like haemorrhoidectomy .
In conclusion, many options exist for treating both milder forms as well as more severe presentations of hemorrhoidal disease; however it should always be stressed that prevention if prevention is possible should always remain patients’ first option!
