Kidney stones form when there is a decrease in urine volume and/or an increase in the concentration of stone-forming substances in the urine. When these substances become concentrated, they can crystallize and form small stones.
There are many different types of kidney stones, but the most common type is calcium oxalate. Other types of stones include uric acid stones and struvite stones.
The main cause of kidney stones is a diet that's high in salt and processed foods. Other causes include eating too much animal protein, not drinking enough fluids, being overweight or obese, and taking certain medications such as diuretics (water pills) and chemotherapy drugs.
