People can be admitted to a psychiatric ward for many different reasons, including but not limited to issues related to mental health disorders. The most common reason for admission is suicidal ideation or threats of suicide. Other reasons may include out-of-control behavior that could cause harm to oneself or another person, extreme difficulty managing day-to-day activities such as eating and sleeping, psychotic episodes with dangerous behavior, hallucinations or delusions that cause distress, cognitive impairments due to seizure activity or medical conditions, drug use and withdrawal from drugs are also common causes of admission. Finally people living with serious mental illness who can’t care for themselves may need hospitalization so they can receive help in controlling their symptoms while getting treatment and support.
