Bence Jones proteins are a type of abnormal protein found in the urine of individuals with certain types of plasma cell disorders, most notably multiple myeloma. These proteins are actually monoclonal immunoglobulin light chains, which are a component of antibodies produced by plasma cells in the immune system.

In normal circumstances, the immune system produces a diverse array of antibodies to help fight off infections and other foreign substances. These antibodies consist of two heavy chains and two light chains. In the case of Bence Jones proteins, there is an overproduction of a single type of light chain, resulting in a monoclonal population of antibodies.

When these monoclonal light chains are overproduced, they can accumulate in the bloodstream and eventually be filtered by the kidneys and excreted in the urine. Their presence in the urine can be detected through laboratory tests, and this finding often prompts further investigation to determine if an underlying plasma cell disorder, such as multiple myeloma or related conditions, is present.

The identification of Bence Jones proteins in urine can serve as a diagnostic marker for these disorders, aiding in the early detection and management of conditions affecting plasma cells and bone marrow. Monitoring the levels of these proteins over time can provide insights into the progression of the disease and the effectiveness of treatment.
