After gastric bypass surgery, many people experience some degree of temporary swelling or bloating in the abdomen. The amount and duration of abdominal bloating varies from person to person but typically lasts 1-2 weeks following the surgery. During this period of time, it is common for patients to feel full after eating only small portions of food.
In order to reduce and manage post-operative swelling, patients are typically prescribed a low-sodium diet and advised to take diuretics such as potassium citrate or cranberry concentrate. This helps avoid fluid retention that can lead to uncomfortable bloating in the abdomen area post-surgery. Furthermore, drinking plenty of water throughout the day can help move waste materials through your system more quickly and minimize any discomfort from swelling caused by retained fluids in your body tissue.
While stomach swelling will generally subside within 2 weeks post-op, it is important to consult with your treating physician if symptoms do not improve over time or become worse as this could be an indication of an underlying medical condition that requires further attention.
