Q. How is cervical cancer detected?
Doctor Answer is medically reviewed by SecondMedic medical review team.
Cervical cancer is most often detected through a Pap smear, which is a routine test that looks for abnormal cells on the cervix. In some cases, abnormal cells may be an early sign of cancer. The doctor will then order additional tests, such as a biopsy, to confirm the diagnosis. A biopsy is a procedure in which a small sample of tissue is removed and examined under a microscope. If cervical cancer is found in its early stages, it can often be treated effectively. However, if the cancer has spread to other parts of the body, it may be more difficult to treat. Regular Pap smears are the best way to detect cervical cancer early, so that treatment can be started before the cancer has a chance to spread.
