While every patient receives the same level of care in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), there is still speculation as to whether Boris Johnson received preferential treatment due to his status as the Prime Minister.
The National Health Service (NHS) has stringent protocols and procedures that must be followed in order for a patient to receive treatment. Furthermore, the NHS operates on a strictly egalitarian basis with no distinction made between patients regarding their social or financial class. In other words, all patients are provided equal access and being Prime Minister does not grant anyone any special privileges when it comes to receiving medical care within an ICU unit.
However, Johnson did benefit from additional resources given his position; this includes having access to specialists who would be able answer questions about his condition and provide specialized advice that others may not have access to. This could explain why he was able to recover so quickly from coronavirus after only three days in intensive care compared with most other coronavirus patients who require around seven days of hospitalization before recovery occurs.
Additionally, Johnson reportedly “read legal documents and slates” while hospitalized which suggests that extra measures may have been taken by staff in order for him carry out non-medical activities during his stay at St Thomas' Hospital - something which is usually prohibited by nurses while they’re busy caring for critically ill patients on the ward. Ultimately it can be inferred that despite receiving the same level of care as everyone else inside an ICU setting, Boris Johnson benefitted slightly more than average through additional resources available through his position – although this should not detract away from praise towards frontline healthcare workers who work tirelessly everyday providing critical services in times of need
