Q. Can wisdom teeth cause throat pain?
Doctor Answer is medically reviewed by SecondMedic medical review team.
Yes, it is possible for wisdom teeth to cause throat pain. Wisdom teeth are the last molars to erupt in most people's mouths. When they come in, they often grow at strange angles and can become impacted against other teeth or cause harm by pushing on nearby nerves. In some cases, pressurized fluid from the wisdom tooth may build up around the surrounding tissue and create an infection known as pericoronitis. This can be painful and can even spread to other areas of your mouth and head, including your throat region. Other symptoms of this condition include difficulty opening your mouth wide enough to eat or brush your teeth properly, swelling that affects both cheeks on one side of you face, bad breath, an unpleasant taste when you swallow saliva or food particles; along with a sore throat and redness around the area where the wisdom tooth is located. If any of these symptoms occur soon after a new wisdom tooth erupts it is important to contact a dentist right away for treatment before it causes further complications
