Textra is an antimetabolite and antineoplastic medication. It is used to treat severe diseases like psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis. It is also used to treat cancer (it requires high dose treatment).
Psoriasis is a serious skin condition where skin cells build up and form scales and itchy, dry patches. It is a chronic disease, and there is no cure for it. In psoriasis, textra works by killing fast-growing cells in the skin, which are responsible for patch formation on the skin.
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic autoimmune and inflammatory disorder where the body immune system attacks its own organ system's. In rheumatoid arthritis, textra works by decreasing inflammation in the joints by changing defence mechanisms in the immune system. Thus it relieves swelling, pain, stiffness and improves function by preventing further damage.
This medication's most common side effects are headache, dizziness, fatigue, swelling of the mouth, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, loose stools, raised liver enzymes, skin rashes, hair loss, and reduced white blood cell count. You may be prescribed folic acid supplements to reduce some of these effects. If the symptoms persist or worsen, you need to consult your doctor immediately.
This medication may lower immunity and lead to blood, liver or kidney problems. Your doctor may advise certain tests before and after the treatment to check for these issues.
Before taking this medication, inform your doctor if you are pregnant or intend to be pregnant, have liver & kidney problems, and use any other medications. This medication is not recommended in pregnancy or while breastfeeding as it may harm the baby.
