TENOLAM E tablet is used to treat hiv infection. these drugs belong to a group of medicines called nucleoside analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitors. they work by inhibiting the reverse transcriptase enzyme from working, which the hiv-infected cells require to make new viruses. this effect helps to inhibit viral replication and increases the cd4 cell (white blood cells that protect against infection) count in your blood.
this tablet is used alone or in combination with other medications. you are advised to take this medicine as prescribed by your doctor. caution must be followed as excess consumption leads to serious adverse effects. this medication has to be taken for several weeks or months for you to see or feel its benefits. medication must not be stopped unless told by your doctor. alcohol consumption needs to be avoided while on this medication as it may lead to severe liver damage.
this medication's most common side effects are headache, dizziness, nausea, insomnia (difficulty in sleeping), weakness, depression, cough, diarrhoea, impaired concentration, fatigue, nasal congestion (stuffy nose), abdominal pain, and heartburn, unusual dreams, hallucinations and body pain. you may be prescribed calcium and vitamins supplements to reduce some of these effects. if the symptoms persist or worsen, you need to consult your doctor immediately.
this medication might cause birth defects. use effective contraceptives during the treatment and 12 weeks after the last dose. seek your doctor's advice first.
before taking this medication, inform your doctor if you are pregnant or intend to be pregnant, or have hepatitis b or c (liver infections), cns disorders, hypercholesterolemia, liver & kidney problems and using any other medications.
this medication is not recommended in pregnancy or while breastfeeding as it may harm the baby.
