TAKCHLOR ointment contains two medications, polymyxin b and chloramphenicol. both are antibiotic medications that work with different mechanisms.
chloramphenicol works by attaching to the bacterial ribosome (obstructing peptidyl transferase enzyme) and inhibits protein synthesis. thus it ceases the growth of bacteria by interfering with protein synthesis. polymyxin b is a polypeptide bactericidal antibiotic class of medication. polymyxin b works by attaching to the cell wall of susceptible bacteria and alters the permeability of the superficial and inward membranes to k+ and na+ ions. thus it kills the bacteria. this ointment is advised to treat bacterial eye infections. it further reduces pain, itching, discomfort, and irritation caused by infection.
the most common side effects of these medications are eye irritation, burning sensation, pricking sensation and vision disturbances. most of these side effects present for a shorter duration. if these side effects persist for a longer duration inform your doctor.
