this injection is a substitute for iron. it is used to treat a type of anaemia in which you have too few red blood cells because you have too little iron in your body (iron deficiency anaemia). iron is needed to produce red blood cells that carry oxygen throughout your body. this injection is an anti-anaemic medication. it replenishes the iron stores in your body.

iron is vital for forming new red blood cells and haemoglobin, a substance that gives these cells the ability to transport oxygen. this injection is given as a slow infusion (drops) into a vein by your doctor or nurse. your doctor will decide what dose you need and how many injections to use to correct your anaemia. it will also help you maintain a balanced diet with sufficient iron. good sources of iron are beans (dal), green leafy vegetables such as spinach, beans, eggs, dried fruits, and non-vegetarian foods.

the most common side effects include taste changes, hypertension (high blood pressure), nausea, and injection site reactions (such as pain, redness, and swelling). some patients may experience a temporary drop in blood pressure (hypotension) if this drug is given too quickly. your doctor will also monitor you for signs of an allergic reaction such as shortness of breath, dizziness, restlessness, urticaria, swelling of the face, tongue, throat, etc., while you are taking this medicine. if they bother you or last longer, talk to your doctor or nurse.

you should not take this medicine if your anaemia is not caused by iron deficiency. before taking it, tell your doctor if you have rheumatoid arthritis, asthma or other allergies, high blood pressure, or liver problems. this can affect your treatment. it is not known whether it is safe to use this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. so, follow your doctor's advice. they will do tests to check your blood cells and iron levels, monitor your progress and check for side effects. it may be advisable to limit alcohol consumption during treatment.
