WHITFIELDS ointment contains two medications benzoic acid and salicylic acid. both medications work with a different mechanisms.
benzoic acid works by preventing the growth of mould, yeast and bacteria by disturbing their cell wall. it is commonly used as a preservative in pharmaceutical products. salicylic acid is a keratolytic medication. it works by increasing the moisture in the skin and dissolving the substance that induces the skin cells to stick together. this makes it easier to shed the skin cells. thus both medications help to prevent infection caused by bacteria, mould or yeast. it also helps to treat skin irritation and inflammation caused by burns, insect bites, fungal infections, or eczema.
the most common side effects of this medication are burning sensation and warmth at the site of application. most of these side effects are present for a shorter duration. if these side effects persist for a longer duration, inform your doctor.
