Fycompa belongs to a class of drugs known as anti-epileptic drugs. It is used to treat epilepsy (fits). It blocks receptors in the brain known as glutamate receptors, thereby suppressing the abnormal and excessive activity of nerve cells in the brain. This helps reduce the frequency of seizures that affect part or all of the brain.
The most common side effects are fatigue, anger, nausea, and imbalance (loss of balance), dizziness, sleepiness, vertigo, altered walking; and this medicine can make you gain weight, and to control it you must have a balanced diet and exercise regularly. You must inform your doctor if you experience any unusual mood swings or depression, as these can lead to suicidal thoughts. Do not stop taking this medication unless told by your doctor, as this can increase the frequency of seizures.
Before taking this medication, inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding and have kidney disease, depression, or suicidal thoughts. Avoid alcohol consumption while taking this medication as it may increase the risk of seizures & cause drowsiness and dizziness. Do not drive if these symptoms occur.
