somatin injection is used to treat gastrointestinal haemorrhage, pancreatic surgery complications, intestinal biliary or pancreatic fistulas and oesophagal varices. it works by blocking certain natural hormones in the body, such as serotonin and growth hormone. it also decreases bleeding from food pipes by constricting the blood vessels. you are advised to take this medicine as prescribed by your doctor. medication must not be stopped unless told by the doctor.
somatin may inhibit intestinal absorption, and therefore, concomitant parenteral nutrition may be recommended. your doctor may monitor your blood glucose level, blood pressure, pulse rate, urine output, renal function and sodium levels. it is needed to use with caution in insulin-dependent diabetic patients and in renal impairment patients.
there is an increased risk for glucose regulation. somatin crosses the placenta, and it may be unsafe to use this drug in pregnant women. your doctor may weigh potential benefits over the risk. using this drug in breastfeeding is generally safe.
