Primaquine phosphate tablet is used for the prevention and treatment of malaria. It works by increasing the levels of haeme in the blood, a substance toxic to the malarial parasite, and it kills the parasite & stops the infection from spreading.
This medication dose and duration will be given based on your medical condition as prescribed by the doctor. Take this tablet orally with food, but try to have it at a fixed time regularly. Medication must not be stopped unless told by your doctor. Do not skip any doses and finish the entire course of treatment even if you feel better. Stopping this medication too early may cause serious side effects.
Do not take this medication longer than recommended by the doctor. Use insect repellent creams or sprays on parts of your body not covered by clothing. Wear light-coloured and covered clothing when you are outside after sunset. Your doctor may advise you for some blood tests, eye checkups regularly while you are on treatment.
The medication’s most common side effects are skin rashes, headache, feeling sick, difficulty sleeping and feeling sleepy. If the symptoms persist or worsen, you need to consult your doctor immediately. This medication may lower your blood sugar levels so, regularly monitor your blood sugar levels if you have diabetes. Follow caution as excess consumption leads to serious adverse effects. Avoid alcohol consumption while taking this medication. This medication may decrease alertness, affect your vision or make you feel sleepy and dizzy so, do not drive if these symptoms occur.
Before taking this medication, inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have liver & kidney problems, and use any other medication. Primaquine phosphate tablet is unsafe in both pregnancy and breastfeeding.
