The most common test used to diagnose abnormal nipple discharge is a mammogram. A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast that can be used to detect lumps and other changes in the tissue of the breast. Your doctor may also order a breast ultrasound, which uses soundwaves to create a picture of the interior of your breasts. In some cases, further testing will be required, such as an MRI or biopsy that would allow your doctor to obtain tissue samples from around and behind your nipples for analysis. Depending on your specific symptoms and signs, your doctor may also recommend blood tests or genetic testing if needed. These tests can help identify any underlying medical conditions which are causing you to experience abnormal nipple discharge.
