A rectal prolapse can often be treated with nonsurgical methods. If the nonsurgical methods do not work, surgery may be necessary. Nonsurgical methods include increasing fiber in the diet, doing Kegel exercises to strengthen the pelvic muscles, and using a topical hemorrhoid cream or suppository.
Surgery may involve repairing or reinforcing the tissue around the rectum, removing excess tissue that is prolapsed, or Putting a band around the prolapsed tissue to keep it in place.
