Most ear aches are caused by a buildup of fluid in the middle ear, which is the portion of the ear behind the eardrum. This fluid buildup occurs when the Eustachian tube, which runs from the middle ear to the back of the nose and throat, becomes blocked. The Eustachian tube normally drains fluid from the middle ear into the throat, but when it becomes blocked, the fluid can build up and cause pain. Several things can cause the Eustachian tube to become blocked, including allergies, colds, and sinus infections. Earwax can also play a role in causing ear aches, as it can block the ear canal and prevent fluid from draining properly. In some cases, an object lodged in the ear canal, such as a bead or piece of dirt, can also cause an ear ache. Painful ear aches are usually nothing to worry about and will resolve on their own within a few days. However, if the pain is severe or lasts for more than a few days, it is important to see a doctor to rule out any underlying medical conditions.
