Orthopedic Surgeon · Back Pain and Spinal Surgery

Spine surgery is a major experience that can be both physically and emotionally taxing. It involves a complex process of pre-operative preparations, the actual surgical procedure, and post-operative recovery.

Physically speaking, spine surgery begins with an extensive evaluation by an experienced surgeon to determine the best course of treatment. This may involve scans of the spine (MRI, X-Ray), assessments of range of motion and strength testing, laboratory tests (blood work) as well as other imaging technologies such as CT scans or ultrasound. Upon conclusion of this evaluation phase, the patient will meet with their surgeon one more time prior to surgery date in order to understand what will happen during the procedure as well as answer any questions they might have.

The actual operation usually requires general anesthesia so that there is no pain experienced by the patient during it. Spinal procedures differ in complexity depending on factors like location/severity/cause but generally involve accessing specific vertebrae through incisions along side or back and removing disc material from between them or fusing them together using screws and plates for support following partial removal procedures. The whole process typically takes anywhere from 1 - 4 hours depending on individual cases although some may take longer than others when complications arise during the procedure itself due to anatomical obstacles making access harder than expected or tissue not being up to par for good spinal fusion results..

Once finished with surgery patients often report a feeling of relief knowing that their chronic discomfort has been addressed but at same time are faced w/ grueling task ahead which include physical therapy sessions aimed at restoring mobility & strength in area operated by preserving muscle integrity & reeducating nervous system against potential triggering activities while rehabilitating tissues damaged in procedure; wearing brace around waist limiting any movements involved potentially damaging structures around spine until full post operative healing occurs; participating in behavioral therapy dealing w/any emotional issues acquired while living under pressure caused by chronic pain condition operated on before. All these steps must be followed closely since deviations could lead further damage down line rather than aiding recovering journey patient is undertaking over designated period established w/ doctor overseeing entire project every step way looking out wellbeing individual case considers most important all times...
