Echocardiography is a medical imaging technique that uses ultrasound to create pictures of the heart. It is used to evaluate the anatomy and function of the heart, and can detect abnormalities such as fluid accumulation in different parts of the heart, stenosis (narrowing) of blood vessels, and valvular problems. Ultrasound waves are sent through the chest wall into the heart. The echoes from these waves are picked up by a transducer on the skin and sent to a computer, which creates moving images of the heart.
