When it comes to fighting colds and coughs, the best approach is often to take preventative measures before you get sick. Eating a healthy diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables can help boost your immune system, while getting regular exercise and enough sleep are essential for keeping your body in optimal health. Additionally, washing your hands regularly with warm water and soap or using hand sanitizer is an effective way to ward off germs.
But if you do find yourself suffering from a cold or cough, a few simple home remedies can be quite effective at alleviating symptoms:
1) Drink plenty of fluids - Staying well hydrated is important for flushing out nasty viruses from your body as well as loosening congestion in the lungs and thinning any mucus secretions. Herbal teas like chamomile or ginger are great options that may contain antiviral properties as well!
2) Eat spicy foods - Spicy ingredients like garlic, chili peppers, ginger root and cayenne pepper have natural anti-inflammatory properties that can help relieve congestion quickly. Try adding more of these spices into dishes when cooking meals at home!
3) Steam inhalation - This age-old remedy has been known to clear up blocked noses quickly. All you need is boiling water in a heatproof bowl (or pot), add herbs like eucalyptus leaves if desired, create a tent around it with a large towel over the head area then inhale slowly until the steam begins to work its magic!
4) Take over-the-counter medications - Commonly used OTC drugs such as dextromethorphan (used for wet coughs caused by postnasal drip), guaifenesin (used for chest congestion), ibuprofen/acetaminophen (used for fever/pain relief )and antihistamines (for allergic reactions). It’s best not to choose too many products though – just 1–2 should be sufficient depending on what you’re trying to treat.
5) Gargle salt water solution - Gargling warm saltwater helps reduce swelling in the throat due to its therapeutic actions against bacteria & virus infection – plus it feels great on sore throats! To make this solution simply mix ½ teaspoon of sea salt into 8 ounces of hot distilled water; gargle once daily till all symptoms have subsided completely.
