A black spot on a tonsil could mean a few things. Typically, if the black spot is localized and hard, then it most likely is a calcified stone in the tonsil crypts (nooks or pockets) called a “tonsillolith” or “tonsil stone”. These can be otherwise known as Black Hairy Tongue when they protrude from the mouth and are seen more clearly. While these spots are completely harmless, they can cause annoying habits like bad breath and repeated throat clearing due to discomfort or irritation within the throat area. In addition to tonsilloliths, another potential explanation for black spots on your tonsils include melanocytes which are specialized cells that produce melanin pigmentation in skin as well as other areas of our body including our mouths. If this is something you have noticed, please consult with your primary care physician so that proper diagnosis can be made and treatment prescribed if needed.
