The after effects of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) can be serious and potentially life-threatening. If left untreated, DVT can cause a pulmonary embolism (PE), resulting in blockage of the arteries in the lungs, decreased oxygen levels in the blood, heart failure and even death. Even if treated successfully, DVT can still bring with it a number of long-term problems.

Short term effects include pain and swelling in your affected leg or arm; redness or discoloration of skin; heat around the area; tenderness to touch; difficulty breathing or shortness of breath; coughing up blood; lightheadedness or dizziness. Long term effects are serious and may include: chronic pain syndrome such as post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS); increased risk for recurrent episodes of venous thromboembolism (VTE); permanent damage to veins due to scarring from blocked blood flow leading to chronic conditions like lymphedema, ulcerations on skin near ankle and foot region due to swelling caused by bad circulation etc.

In order to prevent DVT related complications it is important that you get regular medical checkups so any potential signs/symptoms can be identified early on before they become more serious long term side effects. In addition lifestyle changes like exercise regularly, eating nutritious food, getting proper rest will also help reduce risks associated with DVT over time.
