Smoking weed may not be the ideal choice for kidney transplant patients. While there is usually no direct threat to a transplant patient's life from smoking marijuana, it does have some potential risk factors.
First, smoking marijuana can put a lot of strain on the lungs and respiratory system. Kidney transplants are already associated with an increased risk of developing lung disease, so this could potentially create further complications for patients post-transplant. Additionally, THC (the active ingredient in cannabis) has been found to potentially weaken immune systems and increase susceptibility to infection; something that should be avoided by any transplant patient who is taking immunosuppressant medications as part of their recovery process.
On the other hand, there is some research which indicates that cannabidiol (CBD) could possess anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic properties that might help to mitigate symptoms related to chronic illnesses such as kidney disease or even reduce inflammation occasionally seen in post-transplant patients. However, more research needs to be done before any conclusions can be drawn regarding anything beyond anecdotal evidence on either issue at this time. Therefore it's best for transplant patients follow their doctor’s advice when considering any type of treatment plan involving marijuana or its derivatives.
