Yes, it is likely that a COPD patient's condition is worsening if he is experiencing shortness of breath after only minor exertion. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is an umbrella term for a variety of lung diseases, the most common being emphysema and chronic bronchitis. As the disease progresses, patients experience a decrease in airflow due to inflamed and narrowed airways that cause difficulty breathing even with minimal activity or exercise.
In addition to shortness of breath with mild activity, other symptoms associated with COPD progression include more frequent episodes of coughing/wheezing, increased mucus production (sputum), chest tightness or pain when breathing deeply or coughing and fatigue during everyday tasks like climbing stairs. If any of these signs are present in addition to the reduced tolerance for exercise then it could be an indication that their COPD has worsened since last checked-up by their doctor. A pulmonary function test can give doctors additional insight into how far along their disease has progressed as well as inform on which treatment plan would best benefit them at this stage. It's important to discuss your concerns with your doctor so they can provide the proper resources needed to manage the severity and progression of your COPD!
