Knee replacement surgery, also known as total knee arthroplasty (TKA), is a complex procedure that can take anywhere from two to four hours to complete. This time may vary depending on the patient’s age and weight, complexity of the case, and other factors such as intra-operative events like bleeding and complication management.

The pre-operative preparation for TKA typically takes an additional 30 minutes to one hour. During this period, your doctor will review your health history and discuss potential risks associated with the procedure.

During the actual surgery, doctors use a specialized saw or scissors to remove damaged cartilage along with some bone from designated areas in order to make room for new manmade parts (prostheses). These prostheses are then secured in place by attaching it firmly in the bones via custom designed guides and screws/anchors. Afterwards, any scarring is stitched up before finishing up with necessary radiographs for confirmation of implant placement accuracy.

The recovery process usually lasts about six weeks post-operation; however length of healing varies based on each individual's condition prior to the surgery and any additional medical care they may need during recovery time. During this period physical therapy sessions are often recommended so patients can regain strength while learning how best move their joints without causing further damage or too much pain/discomfort going forward into everyday life activities such as walking again properly or being able to go up stairs without difficulty after awhile.

Knee replacement surgeries have become increasingly popular due its success rate at improving quality of life by significantly reducing joint pain while also allowing more regular activities regardless if you're young or elderly – thus resulting in greater mobility instead of resorting towards drastic actions like cutting down certain physical movements altogether which could cause overall body weakness if done indefinitely over an extended period of time due lack thereof proper practice afterwards when needed most especially now more than ever following a major operation that alters anatomical structure no matter how minor it may be compared everything else intended where patient safety always comes first above all else!
