Q. How long does a breast reduction wound take to heal?
Doctor Answer is medically reviewed by SecondMedic medical review team.
A breast reduction wound typically takes 4-6 weeks to heal completely. The healing process can be divided into three stages:
Inflammation - This initial stage usually lasts 1-3 days and involves swelling, redness, tenderness, and pain at the incision sites. During this time it is important to keep the wounds clean and dry to minimize infection risk.
Proliferation - This stage occurs within a few days of the surgery and involves tissue growth to cover any open wounds or incisions. During this phase you may experience some discharge from the incisions as well as itching which can lead to further irritation if scratched vigorously. Keeping your wounds covered with gauze or compression garments helps promote faster healing during this phase.
3 . Maturation - During maturation, collagen fibers start forming across the newly formed tissue in order to strengthen them over time as they heal properly by themselves without medical intervention; ultimately transforming your scars over time into thin lines that are barely visible if done correctly post operatively care is taken in order for scarring not be prominent on skin or body due its latest techniques like FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction). Even though most scars are permanent after a breast reduction surgery; laser treatments such as fractional resurfacing have shown success in reducing their appearance significantly even a year after surgery has been completed so that you don’t feel self conscious about them anymore!
