Treating a spinal tumor depends on its size, location, type and how much it has grown into the surrounding tissue. Generally speaking, there are two main types of treatments that are used: surgical removal or radiation therapy (radiotherapy).
Surgery is typically used when the tumor can be completely removed without damaging any important nearby structures such as nerves or other vital organs. A wide range of specialized instruments and techniques may be employed during surgery to remove the tumor including microscopes, lasers, ultrasonic probes and nerve electrodes.
Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to kill cancer cells while leaving healthy cells unharmed. It works by destroying cancer cell's DNA which prevents them from reproducing and spreading further in your body. This treatment approach can be either external (using a machine outside your body) or internal (using radioactive material placed directly inside you). Radiation therapy may also be combined with chemotherapy for maximum effectiveness depending on what type of tumor you have.
Your doctor will review all of these options with you so you can decide which one is right for your specific case based on factors such as overall health, lifestyle factors and risks associated with each option. Be sure to ask questions and get all of the information needed before making any major decisions about treatment!
