Does normal ECG and echocardiography rule out heart failure?

Although both an ECG (electrocardiogram) and echocardiography can provide valuable information in evaluating a patient's heart health, neither test alone is enough to completely rule out the potential of heart failure. An ECG measures the electrical activity of the heart, while an echocardiogram allows doctors to view images of a patient's heart structure, movement, size and more.

Both tests can help detect signs that could lead to or be indicative of heart failure such as increased wall thickness of one or more chambers; an irregular heartbeat; poor blood flow; problems with valves; and changes in overall size or shape. However there are additional tests that may need to be performed in order to confirm or definitively rule out a diagnosis like coronary artery calcium score testing or stress tests.

When it comes down to it, no single test is able to conclusively diagnose whether someone has/does not have Heart Failure - but having both an ECG & echocardiogram done on a regular basis provides doctors with truly valuable insight into how well your cardiovascular system is operating & functioning!
