Despite not coughing or feeling breathless, yes, it is still possible to experience serious health issues due to smoking. Even though you may think you're relatively safe from harm because you don't feel any symptoms, the truth is that smoking can cause significant damage to your lungs over time, even without these outward signs of distress.
The most common chronic lung condition caused by smoking is chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This disease attacks both the large and small airways of your lungs and is usually marked by frequent coughing and difficulty breathing. If a smoker never experiences either of those symptoms but still smokes regularly for years on end, COPD can become severe enough that permanent scarring develops in the large and small airways, resulting in reduced airflow even when no symptoms are present .
It's also possible for smokers who don't cough or feel shortness of breath to develop pneumonia, pulmonary hypertension (high blood pressure in the arteries connecting your heart with your lungs), bronchogenic carcinoma (lung cancer), as well as other forms of respiratory illnesses such as emphysema , tuberculosis , asthma , and bronchitis . Smoking has been scientifically linked to an increased risk for heart disease too. As if all that wasn’t bad enough news - all these conditions carry an increased risk of death along with them once they set in!
It's very important then that smokers stand vigilant against developing these diseases while they are still asymptomatic; otherwise serious complications will inevitably arise regardless of how well one feels at the moment. Individuals need to be aware there is no safe amount or duration when it comes to cigarette-smoking – eventually it could catch up with them if they don’t take steps towards quitting now while they remain symptom-free.
