Yes, a breastfeeding mother can have breast cancer. While it is not common for mothers who are breastfeeding to be diagnosed with breast cancer, it is certainly possible. Breastfeeding is believed to reduce the risk of developing some forms of breast cancer; however, there has been no significant evidence to prove this as a result of studies conducted so far. This means that even if a mother has recently given birth and/or she is breastfeeding, she still needs to make sure she follows recommended screening guidelines for breast cancer - including regular doctor visits and mammograms when age appropriate - regardless of her stage in pregnancy or breastfeeding journey. Research shows that early detection increases the chances of successful treatment because it can catch cancers at an earlier stage when they are much less developed than later stages. If you think you may be at higher risk for developing breast cancer (because of family history or other factors), please talk these concerns over with your doctor as prevention is key!
