Vascular malformations can be painful, depending on the individual and type of malformation. Vascular malformations are abnormal accumulations of blood vessels that may involve any structure within or on the surface of the body. They include venous (blood vessel), arterial (artery) and lymphatic (lymph vessel) abnormalities that occur as a result of an altered development in utero.
In most cases, these malformations cause no symptoms besides their visible presence in some areas; however, they can be painful if they become enlarged or stretched due to rapidly-growing tissues or fluid build-ups inside them. These conditions are typically found in those with genetic diseases like Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome or Sturge-Weber syndrome. In some cases, physical activity is known to aggravate pain associated with vascular malformations as increased pressure inside the affected vessels causes further enlargement which leads to more stretching and discomfort over time. Pain management for this condition is typically handled through medication, lifestyle modifications such as avoiding strenuous physical activities during flare-ups, and occasionally surgery when necessary depending on where the malformation is located.
