Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. The prostate is a walnut-sized gland located just below the bladder in men and surrounds the urethra, which carries urine from the bladder and out of the body.
BPH affects as many as half of all men over age 50 and can cause a number of bothersome symptoms, such as difficulty starting urination, weak or interrupted flow of urine, frequent urination (especially at night), difficulty emptying the bladder completely, and feeling that you cannot fully empty your bladder. In some cases, BPH can lead to urinary tract infections (UTIs) or even blockage of the urinary tract.
