Kidney cancer is a type of cancer that starts in the kidneys. The kidneys are two organs located in the back of the abdomen. They filter wastes and excess fluid from the blood to make urine.

There are several types of kidney cancer, but the most common is renal cell carcinoma. This type starts in the cells lining the tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder. Other types of kidney cancer include renal pelvis tumors, Wilms tumor, and transitional cell carcinoma.
