The symptoms of kidney stones can vary depending on the size and location of the stones. Typically, small stones that are passed through the urinary tract may not cause any symptoms. Larger stones, however, can cause pain, nausea, vomiting, and blood in the urine.
If a stone becomes lodged in the ureter (the tube that carries urine from the kidney to the bladder), it can block the flow of urine and cause pain in the side and back, fever, chills, and nausea. A medical emergency may occur if a large stone blocks the flow of urine entirely and causes renal failure.
