Jaundice is a yellow coloring of the skin and eyes that is caused by too much bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is produced when red blood cells break down.
Babies often get jaundice because their livers are not yet mature enough to break down bilirubin. The jaundice usually goes away within a week or two as the baby's liver matures.
