The sinuses are small, air-filled cavities located within the bones of the face and skull. They help to moisten, warm, and filter the air that we breathe, as well as provide resonance to our voice. Sinuses also play an important role in immune function by producing mucus that helps capture bacteria or other invaders that enter through our nose or mouth. Additionally, they act like shock absorbers throughout our heads by providing extra cushioning and protection for our delicate brain tissues. This is why head trauma (such as concussion) can often cause inflammation in the sinuses and result in frequent headaches.
