Odema is caused by heart failure because the failure of the heart to pump blood effectively causes a backup of fluid in the tissues. This fluid accumulation, or odema, can cause the body to swell, especially in the legs and feet. In severe cases, odema can affect the lungs and lead to respiratory problems.
