There are two main types of blood clots: embolism and thrombosis. Embolism occurs when a clot breaks free from its point of origin and travels through the bloodstream to another site in the body. Thrombosis, on the other hand, happens when a clot forms at its point of origin and doesn't move anywhere.
The difference between these two types of clots is important because they can have different consequences. An embolism can block blood flow to a vital organ, which can be life-threatening. A thrombosis, on the other hand, is less likely to cause serious problems since it doesn't move to any other parts of the body.
