A hernia is a condition in which a body part protrudes through an abnormal opening in the surrounding tissue. Hernias can occur anywhere in the body, but are most common in the abdominal and groin areas. Common symptoms of a hernia include pain and swelling at the site of the protrusion. Hernias can be treated surgically or nonsurgically, depending on their severity.
