If you are experiencing breast discharge, it’s important to determine the underlying cause as this will affect the appropriate treatment. Breast discharge is commonly caused by changes in hormones, such as during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or may be due to an underlying medical condition.
In some cases, breast discharge can simply be a normal part of the menstrual cycle and doesn't require any treatment. However if your discharge is accompanied by other symptoms such as pain, swelling or redness around your breasts then you should consult a doctor straight away.
Treatment for abnormal breast discharge depends on its cause and may involve medication (such as contraceptive pills), surgery (for benign tumors) and lifestyle changes (including quitting smoking). Additionally there are certain lifestyle adjustments that can help reduce excessive breast discharge:
• Avoid caffeine consumption which can stimulate the production of hormones in some women causing excessive secretions from their breasts;
• Avoid tight fitting clothing – wearing loose cotton clothing instead allows air circulation which reduces irritation of the area;
• Limit sugar intake – increased sugar levels have been linked with higher hormones levels leading to increased secretion from our glands;
• Reduce alcohol consumption - drinking too much alcohol has been linked with an increase in estrogen levels resulting in enlarged mammary glands and excess secretions; • Stress management through relaxation techniques such exercises yoga and Meditation – stress increases hormone levels which results in more frequent secretion of fluids form our glands. In most cases these measures alone should suffice but if problems persist then further medical intervention may be necessary depending on diagnosis so don't hesitate ask your doctor for advice if needed!
