Yes, an atrial septal defect (ASD) is a heart disease. An ASD is one of the most common types of congenital heart defects and occurs when there’s a hole in the wall that separates the upper two chambers of the heart (the atria). Without treatment, this hole can lead to serious medical problems such as stroke or congestive heart failure.

An ASD can affect blood flow throughout your entire cardiovascular system by allowing oxygen-rich blood from the left side of your heart to flow into right side and mix with oxygen-poor blood. This decreases efficiency since more oxygenated blood than necessary goes back out to your body, resulting in reduced physical activity tolerance and shortness of breath. In very rare cases, it can cause arrhythmias due to additional electrical pathways between both sides of your heart walls which could lead to sudden cardiac death if not treated promptly.

While some larger ASDs may close on its own over time, others need surgical repair depending on size and other factors like age, symptoms experienced etc., Medications for treating associated conditions like pulmonary hypertension may also be prescribed along with lifestyle changes such as avoiding strenuous activities. Thus based on diagnosis made by noninvasive methods like echocardiogram or MRI/CT scan or through invasive catheterization techniques available today - one should consult a cardiologist for further evaluation & subsequent management plan tailored specifically per individual basis after assessing his/her cardiac condition including any associated risk factors present eg high blood pressure etc..
