Bypass surgery and angioplasty are two common treatments for coronary heart disease (CHD). Coronary bypass surgery is an operation that reroutes, or “bypasses” blood around a blocked artery. In this procedure, a healthy blood vessel from another part of the body is connected to the blocked artery, allowing blood to flow freely past the blockage.

Angioplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a balloon-tipped catheter to widen and open up narrow arteries caused by atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). This technique can also be used in conjunction with stenting—the insertion of an expandable wire mesh tube called a stent into an artery to keep it open and promote better circulation.

The main difference between bypass surgery and angioplasty lies in their respective objectives; bypass surgery aims to reroute blood past narrowing or plaque buildup in order to reduce cardiac risk factors such as chest pain, while angioplasty seeks to directly unblock narrowed vessels using balloons or stents.  Bypass surgery requires more time for recovery than angioplasty does; however, it may be more effective at treating blocks due to large plaques located far away from the point of entrance into smaller arteries supplying oxygenated blood. Ultimately, your doctor will assess your individual situation to determine which treatment option is best suited for you based on how severely narrowed your coronary vessels are.
