Skin cancer is most commonly caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. UV radiation can damage the DNA in skin cells, leading to the development of skin cancer. UV radiation can also come from tanning beds and sunlamps.

Other factors that can increase your risk of skin cancer include: having a fair complexion, having a history of sunburns, using tanning beds or sunlamps, and being exposed to radiation therapy.
