Q. How fatal is pneumonia?
Doctor Answer is medically reviewed by SecondMedic medical review team.
Pneumonia is a serious lung infection that can be fatal, especially in young children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems. The symptoms of pneumonia include coughing, chest pain, shortness of breath, rapid breathing, sweating and fever. Pneumonia can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi, and it is usually spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Treatment typically involves antibiotics to kill the infection, rest, and plenty of fluids. In severe cases, hospitalization may be necessary. People who are at risk for pneumonia should get vaccinated against the most common types of bacteria that cause the disease. With early diagnosis and treatment, most people recover from pneumonia without any lasting effects. However, complications from pneumonia can occur, and the disease can be fatal in some cases.
