The most common treatment for sciatica is a combination of conservative treatments (such as heat and/or ice, massage, and exercises) and medications (painkillers and anti-inflammatories). Surgery is rarely necessary.
Conservative treatments work to relieve the pressure on the sciatic nerve. The most effective exercises are those that stretch the piriformis muscle and the hip flexors. Other helpful exercises include yoga poses, pilates, swimming, and biking.
If painkillers and anti-inflammatories don’t provide relief, injections of corticosteroids or local anaesthetics may be recommended. Surgery is usually only considered if all other treatments have failed.
