Yes, shortness of breath and dizziness from over exertion during exercise can last for more than 24 hours. This is known as “exercise-induced bronchoconstriction” (EIB) or “exercise-induced asthma.”
When you exercise, your body increases its oxygen demand, requiring you to take in more air and exhale faster than normal. During extreme physical activity, the increased ventilation rate can cause drying of the airways that can lead to narrowing of the airways due to spasm of smooth muscle cells in the walls. This narrowing makes it difficult for air to pass through quickly enough, leading to wheezing and a tight chest (shortness of breath) along with light headedness or fainting (dizziness).
These symptoms can occur immediately after exercise or worsen up to several hours post-workout?often lasting between 12-72 hours depending on individual factors such as age and level of conditioning. If these symptoms are present after exercising multiple times over an extended period they may signal an underlying condition such as asthma or EIB which should be diagnosed by a medical professional via a pulmonary function test or skin prick test in order to develop a treatment plan including any lifestyle modifications necessary for symptom relief.
