Yes, irregular menstrual periods can, in fact, affect female fertility. When a woman has an irregular cycle (or no cycle at all), this could indicate underlying medical conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or primary ovarian insufficiency. PCOS is the most common cause of infertility in women and occurs when hormones become out of balance due to enlarged cysts on the ovaries. Primary ovarian insufficiency is another condition that may be linked to infertility and can occur for many different reasons such as genetic abnormalities or autoimmune disorders.
Having an irregular menstrual cycle could also lead to difficulty timing intercourse during ovulation which reduces chances of conception; moreover, it can cause problems with fertilized eggs implanting successfully in the uterus after conception has occurred - leading to further decreases in fertility. Additionally, if you have very heavy or long cycles it may lead to an iron deficiency which increases risk for infertility and other health issues like fatigue and depression.
It’s important for any female experiencing irregularities in her period duration or flow to speak with her doctor right away as there are treatments available that help regulate a woman’s hormones and ultimately improve fertility prognosis.
